Thought Life
The most important aspect of a Christian’s daily life just may be his/her thoughts. Paul has commanded us to meditate on (Philippians 4:6-8). I want to use this entry to really talk about the role that scripture should play in our thoughts.
God has shown me recently that the single most powerful, effective solution to all of life's problems - nay, the ONLY solution - is to study the person of God and His Word.
Check these out:
seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
- 2 Peter 1:3
Christ and His word are totally sufficient for life on this earth.
"and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
- John 8:32
God's Word has the power to set captives free from sin and death.
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.
With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments.
Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
Blessed are You, O LORD; Teach me Your statutes.
With my lips I have told of All the ordinances of Your mouth.
I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches.
I will meditate on Your precepts And regard Your ways.
I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word.
- Psalm 119:9-16
Scripture is the only antidote for sin (New King James says "hidden in my heart").
A voice says, "Cry out."And I said, "What shall I cry?"
"All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."
- Isaiah 40: 6-8
What person, earthly object or concept do you know that will last forever?
Psalm 119:11 has had a new significance to me recently. Think about it, David discovered that the only way he might not sin against God was to do what? HIDE THE WORD in his heart. he was so transfixed by the awesome potency of the inspired revelation of the Almighty that he devoted 176 verses strictly to admonishing its dutiful perusing and careful application. This not only means reading, but research, note taking, mediation, pondering, and ultimately (AND most importantly) MEMORIZATION. Yeah, I've heard that all my life, but never thought it was a requirement..........huh, wonder why I kept tripping over the same temptation for so long? Go figure. How could I avoid sin when I studied God's word at my convenience, or read something, then walked away with no memorization or at best some paltry application. Colossians 3:16 says, "Let the word of God dwell in you richly." So, God's truth must LIVE within us, set up shop, reside in a mansion hidden away in the deep jungles of our hearts, secluded from all the hustle and bustle of the adversary’s immoral metropolis and evil world system. It must have a permanent residence there, be a lifetime real estate owner, refusing to give up its property to sinful real estate developers who like to turn your heart into a place of lustful illicit thoughts, ungodly speech, hate, pride, laziness, and all other forms of immorality. When you are continually drenched and soaked in the word and its precepts, the things of this world just aren’t appealing – in fact, they become loathsome to you.
I encourage you all to evaluate the content of your thoughts on a day-to-day, minute-by-minute basis. I’ve started doing this recently and have found that rarely is my mind pondering or memorizing a scripture. Rather, it is easily distracted by the smallest allurement or worldly diversion. It is my prayer that I reach the point at which my mind is devoid of any thoughts about myself and ensconced 24/7 by the person of God and his truth.
In addition to meditating and memorizing scripture, the bible also gives us two other tasks with which to occupy our minds:
Prayer
1 Thessalonians 5:17
Colossians 4:2
Ephesians 6:18
Matthew 6:8-15 (the Lord’s prayer)
Worship
“I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my
mouth…”
Psalm 34:1
(some verses that tell of the Lord’s attributes and deeds; try reciting some of them back to Him in praise).
Psalm 103:1-22
Psalm 108:-1-4
Psalm 114:1-4
Psalm 118:1
Isaiah 6:1-7
1 John 3:1
I encourage everyone to ponder scripture, pray, and worship throughout the day as you walk from class to class, eat, take a shower, wake up, go to bed, work out, watch tv, listen to music, drive, brush your teeth, talk on the phone, study, and at all other humanly possible times.
"O how I love Your law! It is my meditation
all the day. Your commandments make me wiser than my
enemies, For they are ever mine. I have more insight than all my
teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more
than the aged, Because I have observed Your precepts. I have restrained my
feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. I have not
turned aside from Your ordinances, For You Yourself have taught
me. How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to
my mouth! From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate
every false way."
- Psalm 119: 97-104
Let it soak up in ya bones.
May the Advocate, the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world, bless you with Grace, peace, and His marvelous love,
Bshay
